It's always best if your an early riser!
Simple, the same length as the hammock can span. No need to carry more, might need some if a bit less.
If I use a continuous ridgeline its 30'. If I just tie the ends of the tarp to the trees I have about 12 feet coming from each end. Trees that are 15' apart are as far as I like for hammock set up so 30' to 35' for my tarp is more than enough. I always carry extra lengths of cordage for emergencies anyways so I can always add to the ridgeline if necessary.
Don't let life get in the way of living.
Before I went with a continuous ridge line I used 12 foot from each end of the ridge line to the trees.
But now I use Dutch's setup. Which consists of 30 foot of spliced Zing-It from whoopiesling.com and quick connect Titanium Dutch Ware from Outdoortrailgear.com
Here's a video.

30' - usually have a lot left over but you never know, you know?

I was wondering the same thing but what are you all using for cordage? Zing-it? Amsteel? 1/8? 7/64?...???
