I'm teaching the Backpacking MB for my troop strating with a class a month till spring. And hammocks will be part of the class. Hopeing to move the troop from car caping to backpacking (and yes our curent SM has a thing about always having a family sized tent and all the extras)
About 2 years ago we had a snow camp and all the ground dwellers had there tents blown apart and I was the only one warm and dry with my hammock and tarp.
Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course.

I share the same tale as many of the others. We used to sleep under tarps, I have a Kelty Noahs 12. I started using a hammock and now another dad has followed suit.
I've caught the bug, and am in acquisition mode. I have an open top Kalisto, a Byers Moskito Traveler, and a HH Expedition A-sym.
I take everything with me and try to get as many Scouts in hammocks as I can, even if it is only for a 10 minute chill out.

Our SM often sleeps on the ground with just a tarp (and bag). Reserves the tent for Camporees or other crowded situations. I'm the first hammock user among the adults. My son (once he gets to Star Scout, which is when the boys are allowed to tent alone in the troop) wants to hammock as well.

My son's Scoutmaster was what I call a Cadillac camper: huge tent, blow-up mattress; the works. All of his elaborate 100 lb. setup was expensive, and the kids could hardly wait the two hours it took him to set up his camp so they could make fun of it. He even carried one of those porta-potties! It was hilarious.

Wish I had known about hammocks when I was a Scout leader. It would have saved me a lot of backaches.

That's exactly why I started hammocking. My back doesn't like the ground much. It loves the hammock, though.

Is there another reason to start hammocking? That's the only one I ever needed. Now I wake up feeling like a champ instead of a chump who just got run over by a truck.

    Air MAttress

I do like my Big Agnes Air Mattress in the winter. It is a great insulator. It also slips inside the big agnes sleeve so it doesn't go sliding away during the night.

It's great to see the scouts are coming around to hammock camping.

We introduced our Scouts to the delights of hammocking this year. The first comment I got next morning was "throw the tents away, we just want hammocks form now on!"
Looks like there are quite a few Troops in the UK using hammocks regularly now.
