Sorry to ask a stupid question but does it really simmer? I have heard conflicting reviews of this stove. Thanks.

Sadly No. This stove does not simmer. Some of MSR stoves have two valves for controlling the fuel feed. This one only has a single valve at the fuel bottle. So if lightly pressurized it will simmer or burn low for a while but then you have to pump up the pressure again. It takes some babying to coax it along. But at the end of the day it just doesn't simmer very well. Yes it can be turned down and not be a full on blow torch.

This stove just really shines as a great light weight option for liquid fuel stoving in cold winter weather.
