I may be getting out for a one SHT nighter this weekend, and I'm curious how bad insects are this time of year. I expect pretty bad, but I thought I'd check in here to get a feel for what they're like.

Fit were me, I’d....
Generously soak clothes, including socks and hat and neck gaiter in permethrin. Allow to sun dry.
Before hiking apply bug repellent to skin anywhere and everywhere bugs like to snack.
If no time to soak clothes in permethrin, clothes can be sprayed with insect repellent before wearing that set of clothes.
A few bug bites, and you’re really camping...
Have a great time trekking.
They were about usual last weekend up by Shovel Point.....
..... so, pretty bad

+1 on the Permethrin. Great stuff, but make sure it’s fully dry, very toxic to cats when wet or still damp.
Another that I use all the time for work is picaridin lotion. Good for 12-14 hours and I haven’t had mosquitoes touch me. Some of the areas I go are wooded or areas with standing water that turn out mosquitoes like the size of birds. Mosquitoes love my blood. I buy the stuff from Amazon. It’s expensive, but totally worth it. I buy the gallon pump size. You might find the small squeeze bottles or the single use packets more to your liking.

Summer Camping in Alabama features big nasty Mosquitoes, Hungry Black Flies, and Horse and Deer Flies that are relentless.
I failed to mention Ticks. They seem to be on every plant, ready to catch a ride on you.
Use Permethrin liberally. When you are allowed, build a camp fire and put on some Pine. Sometimes it keeps the Skeeters away.
Suffice it to say a Mosquito Net is advisable for hammocks.
