    Came across this on ebay.
Aspen Aerogel SPACELOFT Insulation Hydrophobic Mat, Per Linear Foot, 57" Wide
    $23.75 a foot on a 57" wide roll.

density is 0.15 g cm-3 (2.45 oz/69 g per square foot), which to me seems a bit high. I don't have any frame of reference here, other than an underquilt or pad would take about $100 of materials, and weigh about 40oz if I do the math correctly, assuming roughly 4'x5' under insulation.

Wow, that's certainly not worth it.

Aerogels make good insulators, but they're not compressible... That makes them almost useless for hammock/backpack uses IMHO... Some day . . . who knows . . .

begging to differ...at least its worth an experiment eh?
I'm thinking of using a torso sized piece shoulder to hips and sides 'ovalazied' for the
deep winter hangs where temps are going to be below 10F.
I used to putting a ccf pad between the double bottom Neutron or Traveler.
When the temps allow I will sub out the ccf for the torso aerogel.
I'll let you know how it works in Jan/Feb.
This use when I'm carrying the external frame pack to accept the aerogel roll
    on the outside

    Pretty expensive

Link to ebay supplier - $5.00 sq ft w/ info on material.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MakeTrack=true

You are buying Spaceloft AEROGEL mat by the linear foot. It comes in rolls 57" wide and a thickness of .4 (10mm). We will cut it to the length you purchase. For example, if you purchase a quantity of 1, your item will measure 1 foot by 57 inches (1' x 4.75'). If you purchase a quantity of 15, your item will measure 15 feet by 57 inches (15' x 4.75') Your still only paying $5 per square foot for this product. By selling this product in the same manner that fabric stores sell their material, we hope this will help our customers understand exactly what they will be getting for their money. This Spaceloft is great for Crygenic temperatures of -460F to hotter temperatures of 390F.

Spaceloft is a fantastic insulator, touted as the best performing insulator on the market today. You can obtain an R-Value of R30.9 with a thickness of just three inches with this product.

For you hard Core DIY'ers out there, read this a while back:

Probably more expensive than just buying the stuff. But if you got the bug...

In addition to sleeping pads, it looks like SlumberJack developed a sleeping bag with Aerogel pads in it. Click HERE to see. Whether this will become commercially available is not mentioned.

i got a sample a few years ago, they put the areogel dust into a fiberglass substrate to hold it and it was heavier than ccf for the same warmth due to the substrate, the areogel material by itself is brittle. unless they greatly improved it...it's no good
