It might work better just to wear the clothing, but a set would be nearly $600. I'd have to hear some actual results before deciding to plunk that sort of change down.

I think you are underestimating those of us who actually go to ground. When there comes a point in trip planning where going to ground becomes necessary due to alpine - I take pads instead of an UQ. Preplanning eliminates discomfort.
Still keeping my down. Sorry.

Just a thought...If this stuff were cost effective, I could see it being good insulation to put between layers in a DL hammock.
Peace,
David
Looks like a 4' X 20" blanket goes for as low as $350. If you want the type that does not require a mask and gloves for handling.
Or $180 for a 2'X3' pad of this.
To cover shoulders to upper thighs, I'd probably prefer 40", and another few inches of width would be nice as well, but it is $30/ sq ft.
Making a vest with a long tail would probably be a lot cheaper if you stay on your back when sleeping.
It looks like 5mm of that stuff will insulate ridiculously well.

Wow you all must do some serious winter hiking in the antarctic or maybe some space walks (hanging on the moon could be fun) to need that kind of protection.
I remember seeing this stuff a while back. Can't remember the name of the company that uses it in sleeping pads, but the pads didn't rate nearly as well as they should have with this "miracle" material.
Other downside as mentioned above - it has health issues associated with it. The material has to be sealed or encased to avoid contact Not something I'd really want to be around.....

Let someone else spend the money on new technology and wait until it's a reasonable price, assuming it even works as advertised!
As for the aerospace aerogel, I read a blog from a guy who bought some online just because he was a tech junkie. The first thing he did was take it out of its container. The second thing he did was find out just how amazingly fragile it was when half of it was crushed by taking hold of it between his fingers. That was a lot of money for not much fun (or long lasting fun...)
I can't buy something without first considering whether I could just make it myself instead. How'd I get so screwed up?
