I have 3 sets of number 2, love them. I prefer not to use anything else.

even with mittens on I didn't think it was that bad - grab ring with one hand, grab both sides of the strap (ie part from tree and part that is hanging free) and push hands together to loosen knot - then push side that needs to be shortened into the knot and pull the other side to take up the slack and finally tighten - nothing in that process requires the use of fingers

perhaps you are thinking of tying the knot every time - I left the knot tied almost all the time

    Not really.

The weights vary considerably. #1 is steel, the heaviest, and is rated for life support. Dead simple, it just works. It can get cocked on the girth hitched Amsteel end, requiring a bit of attention.

The others are aluminum, lighter, but bulkier. #2 is my second choice, but it has a bit of fiddle factor required when letting it out.

#3 is a belt buckle, and has failed a time or two with larger hangers. It requires 1.25" webbing to function properly and be reliable.

#4 is also rated for life support. It is very bulky, and will let you down if you fail to back it up with a slippery half hitch.

I have used 2 and 4. 2 works great for me and I have it on several on my hammocks.

i got 5 sets, but for the AT i decided to go back to straps. easier to work below freezing as i do my mitten test on all things. you can hang in shorter spans like 12'. this is needed if you need to hold up in a shelter. i have over 200 nites on the trails hanging. there was thought in this decision, but thanks anyway. When I go webbing I go with #4.....just easy with a slippery half hitch. It is my deep winter system with gloves on.
