I just know mine by size and color.
I don't duplicate the same bag in size nor shape nor color.

I just plain know my stuff sacks and what is in them. They are some that are the same size and color and there are some that are all together different. I just know what is in them...Then again my gear kit only has about 4 - 5 stuff sacks in total any way.
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.

    I suffer from CRS Syndrome*

I bought some orange grosgrain with a reflective stripe from Paul at AHE. Cut strips, melt a hole with a 25w soldering iron, pass drawstring through and use a permanent fine-tip marker to write on the silver strip. QED.

You could make stuff sacks out of mesh and then see what's inside.

Most of us paddlers tend to have the same dry bags so we tie bush marking tape to the draw strings to differentiate who's is who's i.e. mine are pink, boyfriend's are red, someone else is blue, etc. After that, I've written on mine with a sharpie as to what "room" it's for, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, dressing. Since kayak packing can be a little complicated, I pack my stuff the same way each and every time, takes the guess work out of what will fit where.

You could put a Brother P-Touch label on the drawstring.

I no longer label mine, only got 5 stuff sacks, with my clothes & stuff in clear plastic "Vacuum bags". Inside the pack: the Orange bag is my food, the blue one is my TQ, & the HUGE gray one is my Hammock & UQs. outside, the camp one is my cookset, the small gray one is my tarp. My tent stakes are in a small red net bag.

I used to label them, but after a few trips, my tent was in the bag marked "Cook set" & other mislabeling. IF I was to mark them again, they would be either numbered or lettered. IE: #1 #2 #3 or A, B, C, D. OR, pretty much as I do it now, each one a different color. My set up is as it has been for about 3 years & I see no reason to ever change it, PLUS, I pack the same way every time. Possibles are in the clear bag on bottom right, clothing in clear bag bottom left, Hammock on top of that, TQ top right, food bag top left and across the top. Cook set outside Right pocket, tarp outside Left pocket. Water bottle on Left shoulder strap, camera on Right shoulder strap. With everything else in the front pocket.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

Reading past threads, I saw this and thought I'd add what I do.

I color code my gear bags. My red is always emergency&medical. Orange/brown is always poop kit. Water is always blue. My clothing is usually in the green bag. And etc...
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.

As I am in the midst of shifting over to a Molly Mac Pack style pack, I'm rethinking my packing techniques. My next challenge is to make all of my stuff sacks over again, using different thread for the stitching.

I'm still in the midst of figuring out which colors to use for what.
