Heck, we're only hiking 7.5 miles on the long day. I'm not particularly concerned about weight on this trip. Now if we were post holing in snow or fight rhodo tunnels the whole way or even longer miles, I'd try to trim it down some. This is all well groomed AT.

I do need to remember to fill my thermos with hot water before I hit the road. If I'm carry it, it needs to carry something useful too.

7 miles exposed terrain 20 knot winds with a T of 10F, what's not to love.
OK I exaggerate, only 2.5-3 miles are exposed and I wont wake up until it's 15F.
I think I'll suffer the weight of a parka too.

I gripe good naturedly. We might get cold but at least we'll be outside and enjoy some good company

Take a look at weather.gov for the Overmountain Shelter area.

Two inches of snow Friday night, wind gusts of 43 mph Saturday and 7 F for Saturday night's low. Saturday night will be windy also.

I'd hate to be at RHK Saturday. The winds up there might shred a tarp!

Don't forget some good stakes for our tarps, you may need them. You'll probably want to hang low and tight.

I may change my mind on the Camry if there's a chance of the road down from Carver's Gap being icy on Sunday.

As cold as it will be, you'd never even notice that you'd had foot surgery.

Saturday: Snow showers likely, mainly before 8am. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 10 by 5pm. Wind chill values as low as -13. Windy, with a northwest wind between 23 and 33 mph, with gusts as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of snow showers before 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 4. Wind chill values as low as -17. Windy, with a northwest wind around 37 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday will be pretty tough. The sooner we can break camp and start hiking, the sooner we'll drop altitude an escape some of the wind and temps. It would also be nice to have enough daylight to gather some wood.
I'm headed out in a few.
