    sil nylon tarp... my first

So like the post says I just got my first sil nylon tarp. So the thing is I'm really not sure if there's anything I need to do to it before I use it. When I first got my tent I seam sealed it. Do I need to do anything like that to the tarp ? Also when packing or storing it do you fold it or just smush it into its stuff sack ? I know there has been lots of discussion about how to store tents on account of making creases in the material. Is sil susceptible to the same thing?

I would say that you need to seal the seams, but remember to use silicon-based sealant so that it will adhere properly.

I store mine in a "Python" (similar to snake skins but only one). This video is on a different tarp, but you can get the idea from it:

Snakes skins are two pieces that pull from each end and overlap in the middle....I think it's a little finicky. The pythone is just one long tube that goes the whole way with apparently a drawstring on the end to tighten it up.

Thanks! I've found it to be both a lot simpler to make and a lot easier to use in that you don't get a big bunch in the middle.

Hikingdad hit it, so I'll let that go

That's correct. I use a silnylon version to contain my hammock and underquilt because it's waterproof, and a no-seeum net version for my tarp, both so that it can dry some and because it's lighter.

ok.. I dont get it. When I said seam sil I ment like when I got my tent I seam sealed the entire floor of it. So would I seal the entire tarp? I dont see what sealing the outter 1/4 edge of the tarp would be good for?

seam seal anything that has had a needle poked through.
so, i use a teeny brush, you can use a Q tip or something similar.
you paint the seam seal along , generally speaking, the line that the
sewing machine aka thread injector has taken.
Try not to let it seep over more than it needs to.
It will just add weight and is unnecessary.

The ridge line and pull outs are what I seam sealed. The seam for the ridge line is generally a flat felled seam with a "rolled" edge and it's important to not only get the stitches but the rolled part where water could leak in....that's my .02 cents
