Am I doing this right

First time sleeping outside in a hammock.

Supposed to go down to -5 celsius (23 fahrenheit) tonight.

Should be a good test of my 20*F Burrow and Phoenix.

Wife thinks I'm nuts. Oh wells.

You'll get a little better wind protection dropping that high tie out down a bit, but looks like it will work to me.

Oh, and tie out that other side might help too

Depending on the wind, may want to snug up that tarp closer to the ground to retain more heat. And maybe close up the doors a bit more. otherwise looking good, good luck!!

I agree with the others, pitch the tarp as close to the ground as possible and close the ends in to keep the wind out.

If you want some expert opinion on your setup and to spend some time in the piney woods with similar nutty people (according to your wife), you could always come to the group hang on Jan 7th, 2012 at Valens Conservation area. Details can be found here. The more the merrier when it comes to group hangs.

WIth the way the weather has been going in the Toronto area this month, it shouldn't be much colder than -7C to -10C for the overnight low.

KidShaleen, ( still loving that name ), if wind is not a problem you should be good to go. As others have said, if wind is a problem, you might want to lower tarp to ground level on the windward side.

It went down colder than forecast (-10c about 14*F)

I woke up at 4AM with a full bladder and feeling a chill over my entire backside. If it wasn't for having to go to the bathroom I would have toughed it out.

Once inside the house and hit by that warm, moist air I decided to hit the couch.

Next time I'll definitely seal the tarp up tighter and lower - that would likely do the trick.

Don't let being nuts bother you. Everyone that I tell about winter hanging thinks I'm nuts too. That's just part of the deal. You get used to it.

I would not think you should have gotten chilled. Did you eat well before slumber?
