Backpacker Mag Hammock review

The new issue of Backpacker Mag is out and they had two hammocks that they reviewed. One was the ATHH by our own Chief HAmmock Officer and the other was theLawson Blue Ridge Camping Hammock and that was it.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone that owns a Lawson hammock. Very rarely talked about, that's for sure. I'm not saying that the Lawson and the ATHH are not awesome hammocks, but it seems an odd choice of hammocks for a review.

Were they reviewed as camping hammocks or more just backyard hammocks?

Just checked out the Lawson. At 4lbs and the packed size of a tent I doubt I'd be interested. It is an interesting, and with some mods might not be too bad. I think I'll stay with my Claytor for now.

I couldn't help but notice that our beloved Hammock Forum was somehow missing fron their "links" section. Can't imagine why. (ignorance is bliss I suppose)

According to them, they were rated #1 by both Backpacker and Outside mag. Huh??

I not exactly sure what ATHH stands for but it's in reference to the Travel Hammock and this thread.

I saw the Backpacker article. Not much more than a blurb. I would think that the net effect on the hammock camping community would be nearly zero except for one thing: They mentioned that one of the hammocks( I forget which one) came with all the gear necessary to hang it; ropes. No mention of using tree huggers/straps at all. The people out there who are ready to whip out their wallet and buy a new piece of gear without properly educating themselves on it's use are liable to do a little damage to some trees. I say a little, because this same lack of knowledge will quickly lead them to the conclusion that these things are uncomfortably cold! Then they will discontinue use and spend another wad of money on the next miracle gadget that they read about in Backpacker. Those who are genuinely curious will seek out more information the way we all do now: on the internet. This will eventually lead them to this site, or Sgt. Rock's, or Risk's, JustJeff, etc. And down the rabbit hole they will go.

Once again, Backpacker proves how out of touch with "real hikers" it truly is. Unfortunately, they've ben that way for years. It also shows how little research and how poorly prepared they were before they wrote that so-called article. Every time I sneak a peek of that rag at the newsstand, it reminds me why I won't pay good money for it.
