    Hammock sock question

I am thinking about making a hammock sock from ripstop nylon from walmart. The material I have is 8.33 linear yards x 62 inches and weighs between 3/4 and 1 lb. so I guess it's 1.3 oz or close. I am going to make one with shock cord at the top on both sides so that it comes together on the top.
My question is, Is there a condensation problem with this. Will my body and breath turn this into a little sauna? I don't know if I would use this above freezing so would that make a difference? As far as I know this is not treated or dwr.

    Just a wild guess....

My understanding about heat and moisture is that "heat pushes moisture away" . It's a given that you will be giving off moisture through sweat and breathing. The question is whether you will have enough heat to push that moisture completely out of your system. Are you leaving any direct avenues to vent out your breath moisture? Or will it have to pass through a breathable layer? Results from testing may vary because of differing humidty levels at the times of use. What may work just fine one night could be a soggy mess the next. My best guess is that the better you are able to vent your breath moisture the less condensation you will have to deal with the next day. Good luck. Would like to hear how it all works for you.

Yep, make sure you can ventilate or you will have a wet sock, or even snow on the inside. BURRR!

Try it. Condensation in hammock socks varies with a number of factors, the big three of which are (1) your metabolism, (2) ambient temperature (beware 32° F! , and (3) relative humidity. That's too many to think about at one time. Try it.

    My theory..build it.
Especially if it is with cheap WW fabric.
WV said it best, lots of variables, some like 'em, some don't.
    Good Luck.

I have a nylon sock. I have used it in the 20 to 30 degree range. Snow one of those nights. I usually have it open some at the end for some ventilation. I have not had any major condensation problems with it.

I've heard that breathing through your nose releases considerably less moisture than through your mouth.

If you can see through the ripstop, it'll probably breathe well enough. If it's freezing outside, it'll likely get frosty...

In my experience, I liked my sock, but now just go with an overcover, but I don't camp in real winter conditions...

    Give it a try!

I like socks a lot...almost always bring one along on non-summer trips. Mine can zip all the way closed or can have some ventilation. I don't normally get much condensation, but I'm getting better at figuring out which conditions will cause it and ventilating appropriately that night. FWIW, I normally use 1.1 (1.3) osy DWR.
