Ray Mears style of suspension - anyone use?

i use all 3 knots he uses mostly because i use webbing/strapping instead of rope. i think the knots work better with webbing(excluding the adjustable knot for the tarp).....my next project is to make/use amsteel whoopies but like ray says, it is good to know some knots if you have an equipment failure.

Couldn't agree more. These knots work with dyneema too, which is handy

I have found that the sling isn't particularly easy to adjust though.

I started off using his method, poorly. Don't get me wrong, his method is great, I just tied them poorly.

Ray's voice is totally relaxing too, like he could be under attack from some large animal and still maintain that dulcet tone. He's quite the knowledgeable fellow.

I used that system for four or five years until I stumbled across this place just as whoopies were taking off.

It's dead easy to tie using only a couple of knots, plus using webbing all the way it's nice to pull apart when it's freezing and the fingers have stopped working.

The only down side is carrying the bundles of webbing, switching to whoopies and straps I've saved 15oz or so.

I agree with Shewie, it's dead easy to tie. I currently use the Evenk hitch for one end of a continuous ridge line with a Truckers hitch at the other, for tension. The hammock has adjustable webbing (WBBB) so no need to use it there. Although I've now bought a WB mambajamba tarp so will probably tie in to each end with a slipped Garda hitch at the tie in rings. Still love the Ray Mears knot's though.

I had a bit of a problem with Siberian hitch - creating slack while tensioning it for the first time and later coming completely loose over time. I still don't know how or why it was happening, it's probably my own problem.

Now I'm using what was fancy here two years ago:
gathered end hammock (with webbing loops on both ends)
simple webbing straps with loops tied on one end
toggles (made out of random branches)
marlinspike hitch

It needs no sewing or other skills, loop knot is trivial, marlinspike is really easy, almost doable with one finger. If something is beyond use - I can replace any piece with any piece of thicker cord until reaching first hardware store where I'll find all I need to recreate whole suspension. I found it to be really reliable and easy to set it up, break it down, replace or repair on the go.

I guess this setup was faved here on hammockforums before all this slings, clips and amsteel mess started, now the forums look more like advertisement board with brand names all over the place.
