I'm doing an overnight backpack there this weekend, about 5mi in from Bull Pen Ranch. I just put together my hammock setup so this will be it's maiden voyage. I'm interested in camping there again or somewhere else in late Jan too. I don't know many specific places to hang. Most places with trees in AZ are the coldest places this time of year. If you want a chilly hang Crown King might be a good place. I'd like to do some hiking around there sometime.

I'm doing a Crown King run on th 14th or 21st of January with my family on ATV's, iwantedto do West Clear Creek so icould do a nice hike rather than bounce around high speed ride. I'd be interrestedin a trip report when you get back from your overnighter, specificaly the low temp. Be safe!

Arizona Winter Hang - Great Idea

Hi lowclass: Thanks for posting. I would like to participate in a late January hang... cold weather is OK. I think that your planned dates of January 28-29+ will work for me. But I will need to keep a close eye on work requirements. Personal time-off, is hard for me to schedule with confidence.

I bought myself an Aarn "Effortless Rhythm" for Christmas. I'm looking forward to an opportunity to put it through its paces.

What kind of hike in are you looking at? I'm not sure I'm ready yet for a mid winter hang, but I might be able to gear up quickly...

As I recall from the last years adventure (I didn't make it to due to a doctor being a buzz kill) its only a couple-few (2-3 miles not 20-30) miles down a hill to the creek and areas to set up are available all over. I hiked a different trail into there last year and ended up just down stream where two creeks converge and camped next to a burn area... I did this because FR81E was closed, but didn't want to give up on fun. I'm not the strongest hiker so it won't be a long distance trip (for me atleast). I'm hoping to catch the attention of some veteran hangers maybe give some of us newbies some advice and tips for hanging. Also as I recall there are pleanty oftrees up top by vehicle parking tohang a hammock... Just beware the skunks someone had a great story to tell after last years adventure sleepingup top.

Is this the map you are referring to?

Just got back from my trip. We parked at Bull Pen ranch and hiked in to the 4th creek crossing. We ended up camping there. I was the only hanger. I didn't take a thermometer, but I sleep in a 0deg mummy bag on top of a Z-rest and a hip-to-head length ridgerest. I was toasty all night. There are a lot more hanging options closer to the trailhead and at the trailhead. We also hiked an hour further in today but that part of the trail stays way above the river so I didn't see any good camping spots.
