Whipping cord ?

I originally thought you needed something bulky (why I used 550 cord), but apparently it doesn't really matter. As long as the support attachments are cinched tight, small stuff should work fine. I haven't slipped past my wire ties yet.

Mine is W-whipped right now and I like it so far. I'm thinking about making it into an insulated hammock soon though, in which case I'll switch to the 'normal' whipping. The W adds more creases in the middle of the hammock, which would make it hard to get the insulation to work properly I think.

As far as I can tell, the whipping shouldn't take much of the force at all. Presumably, the attachment method uses some kind of constricting device (slip knot, larkshead, etc.) which sizes itself to the material just below the hem and can't slip past the additional bulk caused by the sewing.

I think the whipping simply keeps the material folded the way you want it while the attachments have no tension on them. Also, if you tighten your edges/middle as Jeff suggests on his instructions, the whipping probably does do some work there; it should keep these overly-pulled sections from slipping.

I will take this one keeping in mind I am needbie at this but have a lot of expernce with cable ties. if you use the one s with the metal tooth in it and not the cheep ones that are molded but the one that are extrued .they are weighted and will prolely hold more weight than the rope you are using to hold the hammonk up. you can get them from 3/32 up to 1 " wide with 1/4 being the most popuer but keep in mind you have to have the metal tooth not the plastic tooth. which holds alot of weith but two of the same thing are no equal. hope this helps

Are you talking about something like a hose clamp? I'm not sure if I'd want something with 'metal teeth' in contact with my hammock material....not to mention weight. Then again, I'm not really sure what you're talking about.

As far as strength, you don't really need much as others have said here.

I use paracord for the same reason. I kind of like the bulkier paracord to help stop the the attachment ropes if they slip. You can also use high quality boot laces. They worked so good I could not undo it the last time I used them.

For the way I whip the hammock, bb said it right - all it does is hold the hammock together and keep the sides/bottom tight. The hammock support is constricted around the hammock when I'm in there and doesn't put ANY force at all on the whipping. So in theory, I don't even need the whipping...but I'm not that brave.

So pretty much any cord would work. I use 550 cord just b/c I have a ton of it, but I remember someone else uses shoestrings and said it works fine. I don't think diameter matters much...zipties seem to work well, after all.

If you're having trouble picturing it, have you look at my whipping page (more jokes here)? What would make it more clear to you?

The wire ties that he is talking about have a plastic body. The only difference is that where the cheap ones have plastic teeth, these have metal teeth. I think there is also metal where the teeth lock into the tie.

I think the metal is not on both sides of the ties, but I may be wrong on this one. The metal makes the ties lock in better and hold better. Metal to metal instead of plastic to plastic connection.

I already have some of this. I wasn't sure if I could use it or not for whipping. (now I know!)

And as for that last offer........
$5 ??? for a fellow hammocker? When I have a Nest to save up for??
