    Splicing tool question

I'm tryin to make some whoopies out of zing-it, and can't figure out how in the world to securely attach the end of the zing-it to the end of my guitar string fid. There's got to be some trick I'm missing.
Also should I push the zing-it thru the bury or pull it thru.

You have your guitar string doubled, right? Push the bent end through the bury and pull the end of the zing-it back through. Remember to taper the end of the zing-it before you put it through the loop in the guitar string.

Not being a guitar player, I usually use a piece of network cable. Untwist one of the twisted pairs in a Cat5 (or so) cable to make your fid. Leave the insulation on the wire.

I hope I've understood your question correctly. Let us know how it goes.

Yes sir I have it doubled up, but I seem to have trouble keeping the zing-it in the doubled end when pulling it back through the bury. Every time, it slips out of the fid, and I end up pulling an empty fid out.

Try using it by doubling the wire over on itself. I like to use a bit of epoxy putty to hold the two ends together, giving me something to hang on to. This creates what is essentially a needle with a full length eye that holds the line well when you slide it all the way down to the tip. You might be able to find an instructional video showing one in use.

Cool, I think I just have bad technique. From what ya'll are saying, I'm doing it right by pinching the zing-it into the end of my fid.

Push and pull are relative terms. If you push tubular braid shorter it expands the diameter so you can work the end back through the center. When I do it the tool is part puller and part guide for milking the outer braid over the inner piece. You also need to allow for the expansion of the outer braid shortening the bury length. Too long a bury area is better than too short.

Make sure the wire is pinched tight and insert only the tapered tip of your line through the eye. Slide that all the way down to the tip of your wire and fold it back on itself as you start the bury.

I use a yarn needle and it seems to work just fine. Teh guitar string thing just seemed like it would catch too much. Does it?

If you double it for the full length there's nothing to catch, works great.

Thanks DrPappy, your advice on puttying the two free ends is the ticket. I was having a problem keeping the fid eye tight enough to hold the zing it. I soldered the two free ends of the doubled wire and this keeps the two pieces of wire close together at all times so the zing it doesn't slip out.
