Chattooga River Hang Jan 6,7,& 8

I had a post up earlier about a North GA Hang. The dates were going to be the 4,5,& 6th of January. Well as usual, work hours changed so now I have changed the dates to the 6,7 & 8th. So here is the scoop:

Where: Chattooga River upstream of Burrels Ford Campground

Directions taken from Swampfox: Hike north along the Chattooga from Burrells Ford to the bridge over the East Fork. There is a multitude of hanging opportunities just before you cross the bridge. It's about a 30-45 minute easy hike from the trailhead.

When: Friday January 6 - Sunday January 8

I have a meeting Friday morning and plan on leaving shortly after that. Should get to the river early afternoon. I am planning on camping down in the area near the footbridge across the East Fork. There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of hanging spaces.

    Conditions

Now I do not mind cold weather but if it looks like it is going to be a nasty weekend I probably will not go. Temps in the low 20's do not bother me, low teens may be questionable but not out of the possibility. Low 30's and rain all day, definitely out. After all, I do this for fun not to prove anything. So lets keep and eye out on the weather and look at this site Wednesday and Thursday before the trip.

So looking forward to all of you to come along.

Lazybee, you can make it now because it is the weekend.

Floorman, hope you can make it and I have a new saw to help with the fire.

The weather report is looking much better so the trip is a go. Who else is going to meet me on the Chattooga?

I had been looking at the original hang, but couldn't go because it was during the work week. I will see if I can accomodate this last minute.

Weather.com currently lists highs in the mid 50s and lows in the mid to upper 30s with a 30% chance of rain on Sunday only. Not too bad at all considering how cold it is there right now! Brrrrrrr!!!

    Any other weekend

And I might be able to swing it, but Saturday is my daughter's 1st birthday party. Sorry, but I wouldn't miss out on that for the world. Have fun though.

I would love to join you but can't swing it this weekend. The latest weather report I saw looked pretty good.
Ya'll have a great time and be safe.

Looks like I will be able to get away from my meeting around 10 to 11 o'clock Friday morning. If the beach site is open I probably will stay there. If not look for me down near the footbridge camped near the river.

Can't wait. Hope to see some more folks come out.

I so wish I could make this but I would get in a TON of trouble for missing my daughter's 9th birthday this weekend. Y'all have a GREAT time. That beach site is a great site. I can't wait to get back up that way soon. This time my feet will be prepared.

    Chattooga Hang

I am going to try and make it Grizz, but I cannot leave work before 5 PM Friday (tomorrow). My options are: wait and drive up EARLY Saturday morning, or since we should have a decent amount of the moon showing, I may hike in the dark and try to find a decent hang for the night. Leave the candle lantern on so I don't walk past!

I too must work on Friday, LazyBee. You could do what I'm planning to do in the event of a late arrival, and that is make camp close to the trailhead that night and then pack up and join everyone else in the morning. If you cross over Burrells Ford into Georgia, there is a parking lot on the left with footpaths down to the river. There is no official trail there, but many fire ring have been set up, and I suspect most/all of them would be open this time of year. Several weeks ago, I employed this strategy and was able to find a decent spot within throwing distance of where I parked.

Still not sure if I can make it, but I will probably camp near the trailhead the first night if I do.

    Lazybee,

If the beach site is open that is where I am planning to hang. If not I will probably take the spot Floorman had before. I think you know where both of those spots are located.

    Can't wait to get there.
