Learning from bad mini-critter experience: Mine is gutted, open, and on the deck under the hammock. If weather threatens it goes, as others have stated, in the bag liner, but still open, and on the deck under the hammock. Haven't had a critter hole in years.

However, I turn everything I'm touching (including my pack) into a potential salt lick after about 30 mins on trail... HYOH

I take the approach of turning my pack into a "boat" of sorts. I put my pack cover on my pack and then place it under my hammock with the pack cover side facing down. That way it is protected from any water running under it (by the pack cover) and also from rain from above (from the tarp).

I like the mini hammock under your hammock idea.

I like the gear hammock idea but I usually hang pretty low to the ground so I can reach out and cook breakfast, tend the dog if need be, etc. For me, the backpack doesn't have to be with me and could be hung in a gear hammock away from me.

The gear hammock could probably be made from sil and be enclosed.

    +1....Works for me.

Mine sits in reach on a small piece of plastic (14x14) that I have carried for 16 years.
If heavy rain and wind may lay my rain jacket over it. Have a plastic compactor bag inside the pack but have never put my whole pack in it. doubt I ever will.

That's pretty much what I do too. Mice wont eat a hole this way. I had a friend laugh at me for doing this when I found a big bettle bug inside the next morning....I just shook him out and sent him on his way

My pack is usually empty at night, and I don't really like carrying a footpad to use with my 3/4 UQ, so I just bring it into the hammock with me and put it under my feet. If the pack is wet or it is inconvenient to have the pack in my hammock, I just soft-shackle it to the suspension of my hammock.

I hang mine in a gear hammock that I made myself.

Here is a video of the gear hammock:

Here is a video that shows the gear hammock in action above my hammock:

Really love it. Everything stays dry and up our of the way. Also, I don't have to bend over to get everything out. I then just use my plastic sheet on the ground as a "Welcome Mat"

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.
