testing UL winter setup

I’ve been working on building a winter UL hammock kit for low temps below freezing.

I started with..
Shelter: WBBB (Warbonnet Blackbird) hammock
superfly tarp
total = 52oz. (26ozs per item with suspension & guylines)

Suspension note; On any of my hammocks I have switched out stock suspension to dynaglide whoopie slings & amsteel tree straps. using dutchware hardware (mini biners, hooks or tarp flyz)

This is my current winter setup (for below freezing temps).

winter insulation:
UQ #1 3 season Yeti rated at 20-25degrees? 25/30+* is my comfort zone with this quilt = 12.5ozs

OR

UQ#2: hammockGear.com winter phoenix rated at zero degrees. 21.5ozs

TQ: 3 season Hammockgear.com burrow top quilt. 20.1ozs

Shelter:
Warbonnet traveler hammock with modified suspension. 10ozs
hammockgear.com cuben fiber tarp 7.5ozs with guylines
mydiygear.com winter hammock sock 8.5ozs

The setup today included UQ#2, TQ & the 3 shelter items listed. If my math is right total = 67.6ozs (4.25lbs)

That’s 1.6lbs? lighter than what i started with — plus I’m carrying an extra item (the hammock sock) with the current setup.

When I was testing the setup today - there was a bit of wind. As soon as I pulled up the hammock sock I could not feel the wind.

It was funny trying to setup cuben tarp in the wind. Need to work on that skill some more..

I’m really happy with the current winter setup. I’ll be testing this combo/setup for the first time next weekend. I’m excited to see how it performs. Night time temps looks like they might be well below freezing in NW GA.

I'll probably set it up again tmwr to practice plus if I don't i'll get stuck in the house doing chores.

Its much nicer on my back - my old bones likes the lightweight.

Let us know how it performs, especially the 3 season TQ. --I returned my 3 season for a four season 0 rated because I found it a little light below 32deg.
Is your sock made of silnylon? Does it simply fit snugly underneath the hammock? --then place the UQ over it?

yeah i get cranky if my pack weight gets over 13lbs

Glp. I think next weekend my pack weight should come in just under 10lbs before consumables. We'll see. Depends on weather & if I decide to throw in an extra layer of clothes.

Under 10lbs for winter! That's impressive! Please provide the gear lists once you have it figured out. I can get under 10 for 3 seasons but no way for winter.

Thats one heck of a setup shawdowalpha. Definitely looking forward to the report an hopefully the accompanying gear list. Maybe your thoughts on the sock after using it for a night?

Nice looking kit list

Have you noticed any tree damage using the Amsteel straps as opposed to webbing? This would be a big weight/bulk saver if I did the same.
