    MN Overnighter Jan. 5&6

Looking to do another overnighter to test some of my winter gear at either Afton State Park or Wild River State Park on January 5th-6th. Anyone interested in joining me?

Awh man, I was all excited until I checked the calendar and realized that was Thursday-Friday and not Friday - Saturday Just made a DIY DL hammock yesterday that I gotta test out. Will probably at least be out in the yard next weekend.

Hey, unless my fiance made plans for us and has yet to tell me about them I may be able to join you. I had an MTB race at Afton but other than that I know nothing about either of the parks. I would like to say that I prefer whichever one is farthest from a noisy interstate but in reality I could only join you if you chose Afton because I do not have the gas money for Wild River. What kind of trip were you thinking? Lots of hiking? Hike in daylight and sit around camp after the sun goes down? Hiking in the dark until bedtime? Making a fire? Chilling around a stove? Staying warm in your sleeping bag? Adventuring through the woods until bedtime?

    It's a toss up...

Afton = site fees and fire wood fees
Wild River = no site fees and no fire wood fees (gather it)

Wild river is one of my favorite parks and there is more wildlife (not sure about this time of year though) The sites that are free are the canoe sites... but you can hike to them and they are right on the river. Last time I was there I had a coyote walk along the river right past my site! Another thing to consider if it matters.... the toilets at afton are like outhouses and the toilets at wild river are more like those found along the SHT.

I'm really game for either... but if you wanted (others could join too) we could carpool. I have a studio in Stillwater that people could park their cars at and we could all ride together from there.

Should also have answered your other questions....

I'm up for whatever anyone wants to do. I like to hike and explore, but I also like to setup camp and hang out around a fire. If we were to go the fire route, then we would need to have time to cut/split enough wood to last the evening which takes some time.

Some things to consider between the two are Afton will be noisy until 10pm because of Afton Alps being next door. Sure, there are no fees at Wild River, but it cost more in gas to get there and is probably cheaper to pay the $12 night fee at Afton.

If it were me, I would chose Wild River because it will be quieter there and the coyotes are fun to hear at night.

    Have a blast out there.

That's a good point about afton..... I was there this past fall during the warrior dash at afton alps and they had the loud speakers on and you could hear the beastie boys playing throughout the entire park

    Wild River! Haha....

If you and anyone else who may go would rather go adventuring instead of sitting around a campfire all night then I am totally down for it assuming I have nothing scheduled.
