    Asym tarps vs. other tarps

As there are a couple of different asym tarps out there, how do they compare to other tarps? I am planning on making an asym tarp from some Sil and was wondering if I would be wasting my money. I've been planning on making a tarp like the Asym-Diamond Tarp on Warbonnet's site

i don't think you will be wasting your money, asym tarps just take a bit more care when setting up to make sure you have good coverage and if it's nasty outside you just need to get it hung in the right direction based on the wind etc. but for the most part they are lighter than the bigger tarps, which is an advantage if your counting ounces

larger tarps are a bit easier when it comes to that sort of thing, they have a bigger error factor when the weathers bad

i started with a asmy tarp but went to warbonnets BMJ and will never go back to a smaller asym tarp.....for what it's worth

I used an asym for about a year, but just got fed up with having to adjust it for the weather all the time...

They're great if you can predict the weather, which kind of rules out the UK! lol

Here's a tutorial for an asym tarp
    http://www.mydiygear.com/pages/proje...m/tutorial.php

The big advantage for a first time DIY project is that there is no center seam.

Great for a backpacker as so much lighter than a symmetrical tarp.

I have both, Hennessy asym for backpacking, and Hennessy Hex for base camping. The Hennessy is enormous an you can house a conference under it while waiting out a rainy day, but you wouldn't want to carry it up a mountain

So... when making the asym i could just take a piece of Sil nylon that is 68" wide, cut it two 3 yards, or 9', roll hem the edges and sew the tie outs, then the opposite corners attach to the trees?

Assuming no loss to a hem, that would give you about a 10.6" ridgeline. Just be aware that asym tarps work better with asym hammocks. An asym tarp with a straight hammock means that you get to choose whether your feet or your head gets wet.

    Look at the tutorial.
Roll hem the long edges, measure the 11 foot ridgeline, then mark for the diagonal and cut away the excess material to create a parallelogram. This reduces weight considerably compared with leaving it a rectangle. The parallelogram type will also be easier to get a smooth, taut hang, although coverage will be slightly reduced.
Remember that the 11 foot diagonal is your ridgeline.
