Anyone here ever built a UQ where the shell was "standard" dimensions, but the insulation was only in the area that would be underneath you? Stated differently, you'd have a roughly rectangular shell, with a strip of insulation running diagonally inside the shell--2 corners would have no insulation, only shell. Does that make any sense?
I don't know that the weight savings would matter that much to me, but I think the bulk would.
I did something along those lines with my first deep winter UQ using poly batting and a space blanket. I put one layer of batting across the whole quilt, and a second layer diagonally where my body lays. The space blanket went on the inside of the quilt against the hammock. That, and a folded up piece of IX as a torso warmer in between the UQ and hammock got me through the night at 5F. The fit to the hammock was good.
I would say go for it. Make sure of your insulated dimensions to prevent cold shoulders and give some room to move around, and I imagine you'd be golden.

Thanks for the reassurance. Like you said, I figured I would make it a little oversize to give myself room to roll around a bit, but the extreme corners (opposite the ones you're actually using) seem like wasted weight and bulk. PF-you probably already knew I was talking synthetic, but I guess I should have stated that for everyone else.
I have adapted these instructions to suit my needs when making down UQs.
The results are a more weight efficient design.

I actually didn't, and was kinda wondering. But really, I guess it could work for down or synthetic. I mean, we already have a few insulated hammocks. This would just be a non-load-bearing version of that.

Darn it. Now I have to redesign my UQ.
Totally makes sense. So, I'm thinking 1/2 of the baffles in the center of the UQ will be slightly bigger with more down.
The question: how much bigger do I make the center baffles, or do I just add a bit more fabric to the diff. cut?
