A waxed anorak is a completely different garment from an untreated anorak. Sailors wore waxed canvas garments, because they were in a wet environment, even in winter.

If you're too lazy, can't sew, or don't have time, there are some alternatives to the fine, homemade craftsmanship of Brownie's anorak.

The selection right now is somewhat limited, but last year I picked up two surplus anoraks for about $20.00 for the pair that were brand new and cotton canvas. You can search other military surplus sellers and often find foreign snow camo tops very cheap. You need to make sure that you are getting cotton, and not nylon or a cotton blend.

All of them make a fine, roomy top for Winter hammock camping.

Strictly speaking, an anorak is a waterproof jacket with a hood and drawstrings at the waist and cuffs, and a parka is a knee-length cold-weather jacket or coat; typically stuffed with down or very warm synthetic fiber, and with a fur-lined hood.

The waterproof anorak was used for kayaking, hence the drawstrings at the waist.
