Zero Degree Overnight!

Ok. So I plan on buying (I'm NOT a sewer) a UQ rated to zero for an upcoming trip. It WILL get to that temp where we are camping. My questions are:

1. Does the Warbonnet winter yeti fit the HH Expedition properly?

2. Any other recommendations to an UQ in that price range ($215, its about my limit)?

3. Any recommendations to a DIY over cover for the Exped?

First, a question...is your expedition bottom entry, or zip?

From what I've gathered, using a UQ with a bottom entry can be kind of problematical because it's difficult to tweak the UQ's hang from inside the hammock that way. Sounds like it's much simpler with a side zipper.

After that...I'd guess that the yeti should fit the expedition fine, once you get it dialed in a bit.

For the temps you're going to be out in, you might consider taking a pad of some kind as a back up in case you run into issues with the UQ, especially if it's your first hang or trip with that UQ. Just a thought.

There have been several good discussions about using a poncho liner as something similar to an overcover here...look in the DIY threads and you should find something. It's a worthwhile idea I think.

Sorry for not having any real experiences with UQ's...I've had pretty good luck with my sleeping bag setup and the HHSS, but not been out in temps down to where you're at yet.

I'm on the fence between a full length (incubator or winter yeti) or 3/4 length UQ (phoenix or 3-season yeti). Can anyone give feedback on these products with the HH Exped? Is the 3/4 length enough to keep my feet warm (using reflectix)?

I have used a winter phoenix and currently have a winter incubator on order. I ordered the winter incubator because I loved my 3 season incubator so much. I really like the full coverage it provides. But I am often torn between the weight saving of the Phoenix vs the full length of the Incubator. I go back and forth so I just order them all and decide which one I want to use depending on the trip. As for the 3/4 in deep cold IMHO you would certainly need some sort of insulation underneath your feel weather it be refletix, ccf or what ever other type of insulation.

I use a JRB MW3 short on my HH. I've been down to freezing in it. I recently got a downmat - which happens to be in your price range. In terms of that price range, it is your best bet for staying warm at those temps. The pad may be a little squirrelly at first, but its a sure fire way to stay warm on your backside. Don't know if I'd trust hanging the first time with an UQ at zero.

FYI - I was considering the Yeti as well when looking at an UQ, but in asking Brandon about it, he is the one that suggested the MW to go with the HH.

Thank you lazy river road and dakotaross. I just had a thought....has anyone made a DIY reflectix footbox...say 20"X18"x12" maybe slightly longer to the knee...this would allow me to use the 3/4 length UQ? It would be light n warm!
If so, any pics?

I just got a HG zero degree phoneix - being I'm 5' 3" tall it is almost full coverage for me. So for me I considered my height in the factor as well as weight of quilt when I got a winter quilt
