Reviewers: Replace ATHH ropes!!

The ropes on my skeeter-beeter are different than the ropes on my ATHH. At least they appear so. The skeeter-beeter ropes have a core. I don't see a core with my ATHH ropes.

My ATHH ropes looked to be nylon, when looking after it snapped.

Mine had frayed and was close to breaking so I went to REI and got a pack of the Bluewater 5mm cord to replace them both with. It's rated at 1250 lbs so I figured it could hold my 200 lb fat butt!! I cut off 4 feet, sent it through the hook and then tied it off with a double fisherman's knot. Ended up being 1 1/2 inches longer overall but made threading it back through easier with the added length.

Hmm, interesting. I put mine side by side, to my eyes they look the same. Maybe by end of test I'll "disect" one of each to see any internal diff. After all I have plenty of spare rope. Perhaps my skeeter beeter or the ATHH has "weird" ropes. I just came in from a 2 hr nap in the ATHH as a hammock, no problems yet.

My underquilt & sock fit BTW.

I can't seem to include the pics... but I have posted end views of my ATHH ropes and Skeeter-Beeter ropes in my gallery. They appear decidedly different to me. If anyone can figure out how to post the pics go ahead and do so.

The top pic is the skeeter beeter rope ends.

Middle pic is the ATHH rope ends. I cut one end and frayed it out to explore the insides.

Third pic is the fray on the ATHH ropes from the little use I have given them. The ropes on the Skeeter-Beeter show no wear at all.

I would compair the ATHH ropes to my Ultra light, but my brother borrowed the ultra light last weekend and I might never see it again.

I got my ATHH yesterday and have ditched the stock ropes from the git-go. No need to join the club on purpose! I am going to Harbor Freight this weekend and will pick up a new grinding wheel and another set of 1" ratchet straps. I'll grind the hooks off and attach the stock loop/hook to the strap.

I think this testing began during the 10 days I was in the hospital so I'm not sure where the original thread is but I know that if I received a hammock that had ropes break it would have failed the test right then and there...I must have missed the point somewhere...just what is being tested?

We had one of the owners from The Travel Hammock join us, and offer some of his ATHH hammocks up for testing for postage costs. They had some manufacturing flaws. And other flaws apparently, as some are finding out.

OK, I just spent my 2nd night in the ATHH v1 with the stock ropes in place: NO problems, NO sign of wear, didn't hit the ground. I did remove the hooks after the first 15 minute test, but I can't see the hooks as being that much of a problem.
I don't think I would have totally failed the ATHH for the ropes being defective, stuff like that happens, & I did totally check out the hammock & accessories before use so felt secure. Am I just lucky, or is it that some had a odd flaw in their ropes.

Weird!
