    button hole through no seeum

I searched and could not find a thread.

If you reinforce it with a small piece of nylon can you use the thread injector to put a button hole through the no seeum? I was trying to figure how I could put a ridgeline through one of skeeter Beeter hammocks without tearing a hole or weakening the mesh. Just something that was rolling around in my head and I am NOT a sewing guru so thought I would ask.

    Thanks

Another question do most sewing machines have the ability to do button holes?

I would put nylon on BOTH sides of the netting.
Most machines sold for home use seem to have a button hole feature.

Modern machines usually come equipped with a button hole feature. However any machine which does not do a zigzag is NOT so equipped. I bring this up because many people are using straight stitch only vintage machines.

I would straight stitch the perimeter of a piece of nylon on both sides like a double patch. Then do the buttonhole on the patch. In the event of a straight stitch only machine melting the hole would be a good work around.

If the machine has zig zag but not a separate button hole feature you can make a button hole manually by setting the stich length to zero and the width to maximum. Stationary bartack a few times with the needle. Set the length to a very short stitch and the width to one half. Stitch forward on one side of the bartack to the distance for the buttonhole. Stationary bar tack the end. Either turn the work around and zigzag back the other side or set the machine to reverse and stitch back. If you think this through it is not too terrible difficult to figure out.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I know this is an old thread, but wanted to point out that if you have a straight-stitch industrial sewing machine you can still have your button holes with the use of an attachment.

The other way to do a buttonhole with only a straight stitch is to do a "welt" button hole. This process uses a patch and is turned "inside out" so to speak. If there is an interest I'll do a vid of the process. It is not _difficult_ but it is also not a beginners technique.

    Yea, I hate button holes...

You can sew the 'double patch' like has been suggested and then use a grommet through this. There are many sizes and styles of grommets from metal that requires an anvil and swage to plastic snap in grommets. Since you are only running cord through the hole either will work fine; but sew will a button hole, just not as pretty (not mine anyway!).

Ramblinrev, a video on a welt style button hole using a straight stitch would be great. I'm interested, and I'm sure many other folks are too!
