Prior to upgrading to an actual underquilt my son and I purchased eddiebauer down throws on sale for ~$40 ish. They are probably 650 fill or less. I've used one down to the 20's with some success and Quinn still uses his. Still nothing beets a great underquilt.
Thanks for all the input i will definitely be looking into making an under quilt. Any suggetions on somthing light would be great I like to keep my backpack weight down as low as possibly.
My best advise is to read as many posts on this forum you can. Using the search functions, you can find answers to nearly any question you can think of, and there are usually multiple solutions available. There are always differing opinions on any subject, so ultimately you'll need to make your own decisions.
As others have already stated... practice your setup at home (if possible) so you have a backup plan in case you need to bail out in the middle of the night etc...
