I must be ADHD because If I'm not making something I am planning or fantasizing about making something. My recent obsession has been hammock camping and I haven't event gone out yet.
I got a Skeeter Beeter Pro for Christmas. With the extra money I got I bought enough amsteel for whoopie slings which I made myself. Today I got some more for continuous loops and stainless steel rings for a drip point. The other day I took some webbing material I had on hand and constructed some tree straps. This entire week my hammock has been taking my wife's garage space while I tune my set up.
Being a plus sized bushcrafter/hammocker I want to make sure all my kit will hold me. I started with my webbing tree straps which were sewed by me using 5-7 bar tacks per loop. I put one strap around one tree, the other strap around another tree about 8 feet away. Between the two I put my two ton come-along and started ratcheting. I figured by the time the straps were so taught that they could be plucked like a guitar string that I had more than 1000 pounds on them. They held.
Today I made the continuous loops/steel ring setups, one for each end. Same drill and they held. I had enough left over to make two of the soft shackles. Same drill with the come along, they held.
Re tuned my set up using DIY whoopie slings, continuous loops and stainless steel rings hanging from the stock carabiner that came with the hammock all attached to my DIY tree straps hanging from the rafters in my garage. I think I'll sleep out there tonight just to see if it works for me.
For temperature control I have a camp pad and a poncho liner under quilt with some fleece insulation added. Over the top will be my standard 30* sleeping bag plus I'll be wearing fleece pants and shirt with my mad bomber fur hat. Weather forecast calls for a low of 31*. Can't wait.
