Looking for an all-in-one patching/repair solution

I have a Hammock Gear Cuben tarp on the way and am turning my mind to what a good all-purpose repair tape might be that could be used on both hammocks and the tarp (I also have a SpinnUL tarp that my GF takes out on occasion - it would be great if it could be used for that too).

A lot of people suggest transparent duct tape for repairing cuben - but I'm not sure how well this would take to nylon. So far I'm thinking that Tenacious Sealing & Repair Tape could be the best option. Any thoughts?

Well...first off let me suggest that I'm NOT what anyone would consider an "ultra-light" hiker.

I carry a small bit of duct tape in my kit whenever I'm out. It's worth investing in the good duct tape for something like this...it's got a better range of temps that it will work in.

But...if the duct tape fails to stick...I also carry a hot glue stick in my "oh shoot kit". That, along with a lighter, matches, fire, etc... will almost always work to repair almost any fabric tear. Put the tape on one side...melt the glue and apply it to the edges...use another piece of tape while the glue is still molten to seal the whole thing up.

Superglue works for a lot, and I carry a tube of that with me as well.

Either of these should last you til you get back to civilization at least.

super glue will certainly work in a fix but it may not produce the results that you want for the long term (read: stiff, brittle, ugly) I have heard of many people cutting out tyvek tape in different sized circles and ovals and putting them on release paper to be ready to use in the field. I dont know if Tyvek tape will come off so that you can do a full on repair but I know it will certainly work for a repair, as long as you don't mind a white oval on your tarp

You can buy cuben tape from Quest, or use gorilla duct tape! But be warned if you use the gorilla tape on your cuben and then go to take it off to make a nicer cuben tape repair be very, very, very, VERY gentile as it sticks REALLLLLY well and will delaminate the cuben(don't ask how I know this)!!

Tenacious tape works very well on nylon's!

Either way have some duck tape on one hiking pole, gorilla tape on the other and have both a strip of cuben tape and some of the tenacious tape in your repair kit! This is what I do!

    Thumbs up

I have a vinyl plotter/cutter that I make lettering and signs with. I buy vinyl in 24" x 10 yard rolls for the cutter.

This stuff is great for patching almost anything and weighs almost nothing (think thick paper). This would definitely be a temporary fix, but the glue on the vinyl is alcohol fast, and most vinyls have a 10 year outdoor life, so it's pretty strong stuff. I don't know how it would stick to silnylon or cuben, but it's worth a try.

I imagine any local sign shop would sell you a couple square feet, or even give you some scraps for free.

    Definitely worth a shot.

after having used Gorilla tape on such a repair (I won't be doing THAT again)
I have a small circle of cuben that I primered and put some VHB tape on
but with the backing still on so I can store it or transport it in my first aid kit.
I am using this for all future repairs.

if it makes any more sense, I also finished my 'fort' what some call a top
cover, only mine just hangs from the ridgeline.
I used VHB tape on all the hems as well as a center seam.
I believe it to be a very thin ripstop (it was not labeled on the bolt
at Wally World when I bought it).
The seems are holding wonderfully on the ripstop.

Two Isles knows what she's talking about here. She sent me a little scrap of this tape to put into my repair kit, along with a cuben fiber stuff sack that she made using the VHB tape. That stuff is amazing!!!

I use clear "sail tape." very similar to the tenacious tape. It will work even on wet fabric.
