HC4U-hope your DIY bridge leaves you with no squeeze the way mine leaves me. Different factors affect the squeeze, with different trade-offs. I suspect the Jacks' bridge has more stability than mine because it is deeper relative to the pivot points. But I haven't ever felt like I was tipping out or in danger of doing so. YMMV.
On the tent-poles-as-spreader-bars. Solid. On the latest model the nub of the pole nestles into the base of bowline loop, the loop is 2 or 3 inches long. I looped the suspension lines around the bowline loop, so under tension the loop closes up nicely.
