Places to hang in Puerto Rico

My family and I are going to visit family in Puerto Rico for the Christmas and New Years holidays at the end of this year.

I plan on taking a day or two of that to break away for some solo hiking and camping.

Does anyone know of a good place for an overnight camp and hang?
I did a search and found an older thread with a link for El Yunque National Forest but didn't see anything else on PR. I've been there a few times but see there is a moratorium on camping there...which may or may not be lifted by then....

Any advice or info is appreciated.

    Thanks!

Thumbs up Puerto Rico camp sites

My family spent Thanksgiving week 2007 in Puerto Rico, visiting a daughter who was spending an exchange semester at the University of Puerto Rico. Two nights we camped in campgrounds/parks on beaches. Some photos are below.

I'll try to find the name of the park we camped in first and post it here. It was near Fajardo. We were the only ones in the whole park. It was warm to us, but I supposed November is cool to the locals? The first two photos below show our tents right at the beach.

The second time was at Sun Bay on Vieques Island. That requires a ferry ride from the main island. The second two photos below are in Sun Bay park. We kayaked in Bio Bay. "Bio Bay"

You could find places to hang at both the places we tent camped.

We were only able to spend a couple of hours in El Yunke National Forest, but are glad we did.

We visited other places on the main island, but stayed in hotels. Saw the big caves at Rio Camuy and the famous radio telescope from the James Bond movie at the Arecibo Observatory. Those are the last two photos below. They are in or near parks, so you might be able to hang there too.

Let me know if you have other questions.

    Thanks

Thanks for the info and the pictures, Rain Man. Much appreciated! I'll do some searching for the park near Fajardo. We went to Rio Camuy last time we visited....great place. I may just have to jump off of the little passenger cart thing and do some tactical hanging near the caves.

    Thanks again.

My wife is from Puerto Rico but I am really not up on the camping scene in PR. I have hammock and tent camped in the family backyard but I digress.

    Here's a good place to start. http://www.frommers.com/destinations...094020772.html

Great hang on el youque this weekend. Plenty of trees but very limited spots to hang due to narrow single tracks all the way up and big wind (~30mph +) in lots of areas. ended up hanging over small creek. 2 hour trek to top. new ULM OAM worked great. Had to burn 91% ETOH in stove due to no where to buy 100%.
