Soap - an old old wooden ship, used during the civil war
I was mainly letting some newbies know, if you get a down top quilt and carry it backpackin, expect it to smell like pee for awhile. I guess it absorbs your sweat and funk and doesn't let it go.
I wouldn't go as far as saying expect it. I have used my TQ for over a year and a half now and not washed it yet, it doesn't smell at all, and no, it's not that I'm use to the smell. I just don't have bad BO. Everybody is different, some people just naturally put of more BO than others. I knew a guy in HS that could run up & back on the basketball court and smelled to high heaven. It was just his body.
[Edit] By the way Taylo, I'm not saying you naturally smell more than others, it could also have been something you ate. Just ask anyone who likes ramps or garlic.
It's like a fine wine... or cheese
I'm a sweater and a stinker so I have come to accept the fact that things aren't going to smell like roses when I'm in the woods.
My hiking partners may disagree.
Ahhhh! The fresh woods aroma! I love it!

I talked to the shuttle driver that picked me up on this trip. He said generally, the hikers who have been on the trail the longest smell the least. It's the new ones who haven't sweated out their bad diet yet that stink the worst.

I couldn't imagine being a thru hiker. I love showers to much. Perhaps out west where it's dry, but definetly not in the humid south Appalachians.
I always thought it was funny that we could backpack for three or four days (especially in the fall or spring) and never really notice anything ... until we got home. Stepping in the clean house ... all of a sudden ya feel a bit on the crud and nasty side of the spectrum! Then there was the Thanksgiving hike where my wife met my son and I at the door of the garage and made us strip to our underwear before letting us enter the house!
