te-wa, the new Nesco models blow air down the sides or middle and then out across each tray. That's one of the reasons I picked the FD-80 It's dehydrating some chili right now, we'll see how it turns out. 4.5 hours in and when the flipped the goop it didn't stick to the parchment paper at all.

I picked up that Nesco FD-61 last night. I will be checking my local bed bath and beyond (where I bought the dehydrator) ....

Funny you should say that. I picked up the same model today at Bed, Bath and Beyond with their 20% off coupon. Have never used a dehydrator before, but am looking forward to it, as few foods appeal to me on the trail. I'm hoping some "home cooked" meals will.

I am in the market now for a vacuum sealer. Found a few hand held ones at 25 bucks, but I think I am going to save up for a food saver.

I have a food saver. Mostly gathers dust, but now I'll have a reason to use it.

Am reading the owners manual and just noticed... it says nothing at all about grains (such as rice or spaghetti) nor legumes (what about red beans and rice, for instance?!), only mentions fruit, vegies, and meats. Hmmmm.

I'd go with the Nesco. I have an ancient one without adjustable heat and I've been waiting for it to die so I can upgrade. I don't know if it ever will. I would also recommend "Babelfish5" recipes. We actually just had his Chili Mac for supper tonight.

Oh ya, discovered his videos on outdoortrailgear and then subscribed to his youtube. Great videos and advice. He is very thorough in his approach. I like it a lot. Any other meals you have tried by him that you would recommend.

Me and my room mate will be putting the Nesco to the test on Tuesday. We have some time before classes begin so I am going to check out this new toy.

For storage for now, since I do not have a vacuum sealer yet (B-day is coming up ) I was planning on putting meals separately in ziploc baggies, then stuff them in Ball Jars and put them in a brow paper bag in the freezer. Thoughts on this?

I also have the square one and it came with 2 of the round fruit roll up trays. Got it from Wal-Mart.
