    New guy from NY

Hello everyone. My name is Charlie and I am from Queens, NY. I am a long time camper but a newb to hanging. I own a cheap rope hammock, so I can't say that I don't own a hammock. It is not something I would ever spend a night in...at least comfortably.

Been lurking here for awhile so I do have an idea of my setup. I would like to start hanging on the cheap as I never like to go too overboard on camping equipment. It seems like I can do the whole thing for under $100 if I DIY a little bit.

    Here is my planned setup:

Grand Trunk Ultralite or Grand Trunk Nano-7
    REI Blue CCF pad
    Chinook 12 x 9.6'
I also am planning to make myself a bug sock.
I already own some Byer Amazonas Microrope.

I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

    -Charlie

    Welcome from the Bronx!

My suggestion would be to make your own hammock...There are a bunch of different ideas however I liked Knottys hammock with the bungee in the side. That should bring down your costs. Also, Be ware as most people will say here...the DIY bug WILL take over.

    Good Luck!

    welcome!

tons of good info and people on here.

Looks like you got a solid start as far as gear goes. I'd keep an eye out for hangs in your area so you can see some different rigs and kit, see what you like and what you don't.

Glad to have you buddy, welcome

    welcome to the addiction!

Looks like NY is beginning to convert many to hanging. The Adks are perfect for it!

    Charlie,

Make no apologies for your rope hammock. This was my first hammock and have spent many, many nights in it.

No matter if cost $15, like my old, green, net hammock, or you have to take out a 2nd mortgage to get one, a hammock is a hammock!

    Welcome to the hammock madness!

Welcome to the forum. I'm very happy with my Chinook tarp, so happy I got the 9.6x9.6 and the 12x14 for a winter tarp.

    Thanks for the welcomes!

Avi, I was looking at that diy hammock but I think I will stick to a commercial hammock. I have never used a sewing machine and the Grand Trunk UL is on Amazon for $16. That is probably cheaper than the material for a DIY.

I love camping in the ADK's but it is about a 5 hour drive for me. We only get there on long weekends. Most of the time we head to Harriman State Park or Bear Mountain, hike in 3 -5 miles and relax. I imagine both are great places for hanging!
