    Garage sale find

I went to an estate sale and bought a bag with 2 sails for $3 . One of them is a noisy ripstop nylon. I believe because of its lightness and noisy crinkles type sound this material is spinn.
My question, I was thinking of making a tarp with it. It would be multi colored, but something to practice with. I don't know if it is waterproof. Do I need to make a silicone with mineral sprits solution to waterproof it?

put 1 cup of water into a folded pocket (of the sail) and hang it in the garage over a paper towel- if it drips it need treatment, if it stays dry it is already Waterproof.
    just a test....KM

OK, I did the water test. It doesn't gush water and leak. However it sweats a little

so it was probably designed to be 'windproof' which tends to include water resistant- if you plan on making a tarp you will likely need to do the 'homebrew silicon' treatment.
there are instructions in the DIY forum- haven't tried it myself yet.

Sweat may just be from your tap water being cold and the temps warm enough to cause condensation.
If possible let it set for a few hours. Wipe any condensation off after the water and room temp equalize.

Holding some fabric under a running faucet/shower head is another way to check for good waterproofness.
