    Hello From Ontario,

    Hello,

I've been hanging around this forum for a little while, but have not posted yet. I like to spend as much time as I can outdoors, but have always been a tent camper. For the last year or so I've been trying to reduce my pack weight as much as I can, which led me to look into hammocks about a year ago. But since I usually camp with my wife, and she didn't like the idea of not being right beside me, I put the idea of a hammock on ice. Jump forward, I found some hammocks at the local MEC store (Mountain Equipment Co-op), and so without too much research into it, other then wanting to try, I purchased a Hennessy Expedition Zip.

So far, I have it set up in my basement and I've been playing with it and trying to get the right 'hang'. I've switched the suspension to whoopie slings i got from AHE. and am looking into doing something with the tarp as well.

Had I found hammock forums earlier, I probably wouldn't have bought the expedition, becuase I am 6' tall and found out that it is good for people under 6' if you are 6 and over you need the larger model.. oh well.. its still comfortable and I plan on taking it out in the backyard one of these days this winter. (just need to get some warm insulation first!)

I am a big diy'er so I already have plans of building my own gathered end hammocks, and am currently mid-project on a cat. cut tarp. (not sure if that will work with the hammock though)

I think I've rambled long enough.. Just wanted to say Hi, and thank everyone for all the great info that is on this site. I'd also be interested in hearing about any 'local hangs' in the central Ontario area, as I try to find any excuse I can get to spend more time outdoors. (I live about an hour north of Toronto)

Welcome from AR and good luck on the DIY tarp. It will work just fine with your HH or any other hammock you end up with, but I'd hang it from it's own line and not the suspension of the HH. (but, if you've been visiting here long, you already knew that). Enjoy!

Thanks for the welcome everyone, I was planning on using a separate ridge line for the tarp, just wasn't sure if the cat. cut would work with it or not. I guess I'll have to hang the line above the tarp and not underneath like I was planning.

I put an order in for some 2.2mm zing-it line, so I'll use that for the tarp ridge line when it comes, until then I am going to experiment with paracord since I have that handy.

I think I read that 30ft. is a common length for tarp ridgelines.. is that correct?

Hey another Ontarioan. I had to look at the name and make sure I didnt somehow write that opening post.

Wife was hesitant with the hammocks for the same reason until I got one from MEC to try. Not sure if you know but they don't have a return time limit for products. I just returned mine after a few weeks of trial in my garage. If you can get it to original condition they should take it back.

Incidentally I opted for a couple of Blackbirds (1.1 dbl) with Superflys that I'm very eagerly awaiting delivery of. I got her quite excited about it now. Even have some quilts on the way from Underground Quilts.

I'm just trying to figure what to use as far as guy lines for the tarps. There's a great thread on here on somewhere about this very topic actually.

    Anyhow welcome.

Hello and welcome! Lots of Ontario hangers here that get together a few times a year. Be on the look out for trip planning threads that have "Eastern Great Lakes" in the title. There was just a get together near Hamilton this past weekend.
