Meriadoc, I'v thought about doing that. The only problem is that the hammock would end up being very prone to tipping. It would be like a porch swing or something. I'd be worried I'd tip it during the night. A bridge hammock essentially does this though, at the cost of a higher weight.

I went the full length, double layer route just like mine when I made hammocks for my boys. The 15 year oldest can look me straight in the eyes so it only made sense to do so for him and the 6 year old has done just fine for the last year in his. The little one loves being able to pull the sides over him when he lies on the diagonal.

Plus, he lets his brother's friends borrow the hammock to try it out on scout camp outs. We now have 5 additional hammockers in the troop because of it.
You'll find me hanging somewhere in the sunshine state.

Okay, I don't to steal your topic, but I think it goes right with it. My wife and I just got our first hammocks,of course our son wants his own now, and am trying to figure out the same things. If I am making an 8' or 9' what width do I go with?

A good rule of thumb is to make the width about 1/2 the size of the length

I have decided to make my kids hammocks full length and whip the end down the material further than an adult hammock. As they grow I can simply unwhip the ends and rewhip them to increase the length. I think this will solve all the problems with comfort and not having to make more hammocks at a later date! What do you think?
