    Ramblin' Rev,
I bow to greater experience. I was simply repeating the advice given to me by my dearly beloved resident expert, advice that did get me out of trouble when I was on the brink of despair. I did, in fact, overstate the advice about moving the fabric with the tension arm not fully up. What I should have said is "don't do anything that pulls on either the upper or lower thread unless the tension arm is fully up." Readers are advised that Ramblin' Rev's advice trumps mine.

ummm... let me amend my comments. given the context of yours. Before I had my own machine, my rules of engagement were essentially the same as yours. Particularly given the fact that my wife has sewn professionally for 35 years. I have been sewing for thirty but not as professionally as she. I treat her machines as if my life depended on them.... because to some extent it does.

So as a caveat.... when using someone else's machine... you can not go wrong by following greybeard's sage wisdom.

I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

It seems that we agree that survival depends more on the domestic arts than on the martial arts. BTW, the "greater experience" in my previous post referred to yours, not to my dearly beloved's, though I do indeed bow to hers as well.
