Regarding ripstop, personally I don't think that's important. I believe ripstop is designed to prevent further tearing in clothing and gear that isn't under much load. That grid probably doesn't provide much help when a hammock is failing.

That said, every hammock I've made has been from ripstop. Simply because it's what they had.
Agreed on the ripstop only being marginally effective, but the other sport nylon Joann's has (at least mine) is more like cordura... Their 1.9 is much more comfortable, I probably should have been more specific... (ack, or is it 1.7... I forget)

My personal favorite is a lightweight polyester taffeta. Much nicer on the skin that nylon and not as stretchy. It weighs a bit more but to me it's worth it.

Ripstop is way over rated for added safety. I can rip ripstop with my hands. It won't do squat to hold your butt off the ground. The real key to that is density of the weave never mind the ripstop fibers.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Warbonnet has a handy guide for occupant weight versus number of layers versus fabric weight that you might find useful.

    Hope everything goes well!

But it has those nice little lines that makes lining up and sewing easier.

Ramblinrev- Do you have a source for the lightweight polyester taffeta? Available at the local fabric store?

Ask the clerk for a "top weight" polyester taffeta. Then pick and choose from there. Lots of colors. Different weight options to some degree. But those are fairly limited to be honest. But you want "top weight". If they look at you funny ask for blouse weight. BTW you are not likely to find camo but you never know.

I made my HH clone out of some digital cadpat Taslan polyester fabric I got really cheap at Barre Army Navy. It's not ripstop, but like way it feels.

+1 on polyester taffeta. cost half the price of ripstop from where I'm getting them and more colors to choose from.
