    stuffing an underquilt

Maybe there is a thread about this somewhere that I'm not finding, but does any one have any experience with stuffing insulation between your underquilt and your hammock? I was wondering about the effects of adding blankets pads or foliage inbetween the two. I'm mostly wondering if I could put a pad inbetween the two in lieu of a double layer or a second hammock, would it stay? I could see these things helping and I could see them hurting, any experience?

Many people do it. A pad is probably the simplest option, but you would want to put it IN the hammock, rather than between the hammock and quilt. It would tend to flop around and "break the seal" if it was lying directly on the quilt, as there is nothing under it to really help shape it other than a shock corded quilt.

The best option, in my opinion, is simply wear an extra layer of clothes. A thermal base layer will help, but YMMV, because I personally sleep in shorts and maybe a light shirt. If you already sleep in thermals, you can augment it with a fleece jacket/ pants.

FWIW, a CCF pad is incredibly warm for the weight. It could probably take most people to at least 30. I have sweating problems with them though. Not just condensation, but dripping sweat.

This thread has some good information on Cold Weather Options: Mount Roger's Hang

I personally wouldn't use any foiliage, just because I'd want to keep the quilt clean, but in an emergency, it would work.

when i was camping in ny over christmas my set up got me to the upper 20's low 30's. When visiting my cousin, i was explaining how i had a little CBS the night before (and then had to explain why i was camping in a hammock in the winter in a snow storm). Anyway, she had gotten a new fridge, and i nabbed the white foam sheeting stuff that it came wrapped in. On another thread it was discussed how insultex is ppe foam, so i trimmed it to shape and slid it between my hammock and underquilt and that night i was toasty. I keep a bit of it as backup to slip in there should the temps fall overnight, and it works good. It doesn't weigh anything andcan be used as a sit pad when folded up, its flexable enoughto keep the quilt 'locked on' too. SO yeah, its totally doable to supplement your bottom insulation.

just watch that you don't put something between you and your underquilt that's so heavy that it puts strain on your quilts shockcords and causes the UQ to drop down lower. This will cause an air gap of cold air and defeats the whole purpose of adding extra insulation.

Another good suggestion to use is a mylar emergency blanket.

What about a space blanket between a down quilt and hammock?

Do a search on the Garlington Insulator... I think it's on Risks's site: Imrisk.com

SB's and additional insulation are effective at extending an UQ. I carry a piece of Insultex to augment my Lost river UQ.

Just remember that some of these options are vapor barriers and if conditions are right, you'll end up with a wet backside.

Thanks for the info and the warnings guys. I'm intrigued by the insultex seems like a cool way to beef up your insulation system really cheap.

    Altering an existing sleeping bag

I was thinking about altering an old sleeping bag to use as an under quilt. That way it's already stuffed and baffled. Has anyone done this before?

Tons have. Search around on the DIY section. I just made my daughter an underquilt out of her Disney Princess bag.

It's probably the easiest way to have a serviceable UQ
