    DIY winter top quilt

    My latest addition to my homemade gear collection;

    A winter down top quilt

    Laid flat

    Cinched footbox

    Down plug to stop draughts(still to be tied on to the cinch cord end so it doesn't get lost)

    Inside

    Cinched neck with adjustable cord, the cord loops over my head to stop it moving in the night and make a nice seal.

    The lowdown;

    Warbonnet outdoors winter top quilt clone
    Pertex 4 (very dark) brown shell
    19 oz of 850+ cuin goose down (overstuffed at foot end and head end)
    80" x 50"
    14 x 5.7" chambers
    3" polyester mesh baffles giving 3 to 5" of loft
    Velcro footbox closure
    3mm shockcord cinches
    Gutterman polyester black thread
    872g

    This should see me warm down to about 0F/ -20 odd with my current setup.

    I took a while making sure the length was spot on, I think I've succeeded.

    I went for the cinched end over sewn so it's easier to dry round the fire if needed, as it opens up fully. Easier for me to store at home too.

    It stands me at £90 all in, took my slow self 10 hours to make it, including having to unpick and re-stitch one side.

    Onto the next project...........

    Thanks for looking, hope you like

    Pete.

    They're not daunting to make, this is my first top quilt and it was much easier than my underquilts.

    Get one under your belt and you'll be away. HF is all you need for info, I wouldn't have started if it weren't for this place

    Nice work! That thing looks warm! Eventually I will make some down goodies, but that is for next winter.

    I could have gone for a lighter fabric, but I like the feel of this pertex 4 (1.9 oz/sqyd). The face side is lightly brushed. As its for winter, I wanted a little extra beef to the construction.

    Thanks BBG, it felt warm enough to send me off to sleep on the living room floor on its first test!

    I too admire those who tackle DIY quilt projects, so kudos to you.

    That down plug is a real cool idea too!

    Thats a mighty fine lookin quilt, Pete! I like the ingenuity with the plug. That's smart thinking.

    I just finished my first quilt, a monster winter UQ. I was a little intimidated at first, but now that it's done, it actually was pretty easy in hindsight. A little practice with thread injecting things like stuff sacks and RL organizers goes a long way towards alleviating any fears, and in the woods, no one cares if your seam is a little crooked, as long as it works.

    I'll be moving on to a TQ myself, and will probably use a very similar design to this one.
