    top quilt/ questions

For me being new to all this I apologize now for so many questions to come.

Why modify a sleeping bag into a tq instead of just wrapping up in the sleeping bag. Are the mods just to reduce weight and bulk or do the designs make them warmer?

You want some room to move around in your hammock and the sleeping bag around you will prevent that. You also won't have enough room to lie on the diagonal in turn making you sleep in a banana-like position which isn't comfortable at all. Yes, it reduces weight to do the mod but it's also more practical. On the other hand, people use a system called a Pod which completely surrounds the hammock but it is large enough to accommodate the occupant moving around and sleeping diagonally.

The reduction in bulk and weight is not just for the transporting.
I still use a SB as a TQ.
It often wiggles out of the hammock because the footend of the hammock is narrow.
I think a TQ reduces this.

If you lay in a hammock inside a sleeping bag you are only getting the insulating properties of the top portion of the bag. Laying in the sleeping bag compresses the insulation below you, therefore reducing its insulation properties. TQ's are made with this in mind and to work in conjunction with an UQ which is suspended outside the hammock allowing full loft and insulating properties of the UQ.

    Never Surrender!
Run to Walmart and grab one of those hideous blue sleeping pads in the camping department. Won't be ideal, but it will still be hammock-time. I've used one of the blue pads down into the high 30s-low 40s and it kept me warm...enough.

Yeah most likely money is an issue for me so cheap sleeping bag is warm enough. The sides are wide enough they cacoon me if I want them to so I may just run some cord like a ridgeline and have the bag on the outside to cacoon my hammock. Does that make sense?

Yep, makes perfect sense. Search around a little and you'll find lots of folks doing exactly that. Generally works better on a hammock sans ridgeline.
