    Hammock/DIY discovery.

So I have been searching for a cheap and ready supply of Tyvek to use for a couple of projects I am contemplating...tarpdoors, undercover, groundsheet....

Went and spoke with the owner of our local lumber/building supply place. Turns out his skids of lumber come wrapped in a tyvek like material. It is a woven watertight plastic but thinner than tyvek. Free! Issue is there are a few tears in places from when it is pulled off the pile of lumber.

Just thought I would put that out there.

And why are you putting that out there? Are you sharing?

I'm not familiar with this lumber wrapping material, but it sounds like you can get a $12 roll of Tyvek tape at Home Depot and have at it!

Those all sound like worthy uses of Tyvek. Just made some Tyvek GrizzBeak/doors myself and contemplating an undercover/overcover with it. Since I already have an underquilt, I'm not sure Tyvek will be suitable for an undercover - don't want no condensation on my down UQ!

I was referring to the Tyvek tape, which is $12 a roll at Home Depot. You can use that to repair the rips in your lumber cover Tyvek-like stuff. Nothing cheap about Tyvek or the tape (unless you get it free).

I just made some tyvek doors for my BMJ myself:

I had some lying around, so I figured I'd use it. I say if the stuff you acquired is free and relatively durable, go for it. It isn't exactly a waste of money

USMCStang, I made some Tyvek GrizzBeaks too about the same time you did. Check out my post:

Those look great! Yours are true Grizz Beak, as they cover the end of the tarp at the ridgeline. I suppose mine are more of a door, as I actually mount them about 1" underneath the overhang of the tarp at the RL. Warbonnet has small split rings at this location, as well as the tie-out corners, I presume these rings are intended to be used for the removable doors he sells.. Thanks for the mention in the vid, by the way

Sorry to high-jack, Jayson. Point of this is, Tyvek, and similar materials are versatile, cheap, and easy to work with. They may not be the prettiest thing in the forest, or even the most functional, but then again, neither am I

No worries. Like the doors, will most likely end up doing the same thing. I myself like to repurpose things rather than see them end up in the landfill!

The tape sounds like it may come in handy! I think most of the ripps are toward the perimeter and the center is pretty well intact. The pieces looked pretty big...they have a big pile laying in a corner free for the taking so that is nice.

    Hey Jayson,

How does that stuff compare to the regular plastic tarp you get at Canadian Tire or Home Depot? I use a piece of tarp to wrap my gear in on the toboggan, but if this stuff is lighter and has the same abrasion resistance, I would be interested. How big are the pieces? I'd be looking at something at least 15' X 7'.

Hey Mongrel, it seems pretty tough. Basically light weight tyvek, 15 x 7 might be tough if you need it to be hole free. I think I will slip over tomorow and grab all that they have, bring it home and spread it out to see what is there.
    Will let you know.
