    Diy SPE with multiple pads?

Hello all. So here is the senario I cannot afford to invest in UQ's for me and the Boss at this time so we will be sticking with some less costly alternatives.
My idea is this. I picked up a 5/16" 4'x8' ccf excercise mat the other day really cheap at canadian tire, we have a couple of wallmart ccf pads and two of Hennessy's double bubble radiant pads. I am going to make SPE's that are full length out of thin fleece blankets (i know there are lighter and more compact options) use the excercise mat as center pad and peices of wally ccf for the wings. I plan to stack the HH radiant pad in with the center pad.
Should the ccf be on top or below the reflectix pad?
Should the ccf pad be left rectangular or would it be better tapered like the reflictix pad from Hennessy? I am posting from my phone so kind of tough include a link sorry.

I would tend to believe that the reflectix will be more slippery, so keeping it sandwiched between the CCF is probably the way to go. I depends on what feels more comfortable to you. You could always poke a pencil sized hole through all three layers at the foot end, and tie a small piece of 550 cord through it to keep them lined up if don't want to make a full length SPE. That would help cut down a little bit on weight/ bulk.

I would personally taper the foam pad to match the reflectix...it will fit better in the hammock that way, especially if it's a Blackbird or otherwise has a footbox.

If my math is right, you will have 5/8" of CCF and a layer of reflectix beneath you, plus shoulder protection from CCF. You should stay plenty warm with that. I'm not going to try to guess a temp rating for you though, because different people sleep "hot" or "cold". I could probably take that to 20 - 25 degrees pretty easily. (I'm a "hot" sleeper)

Should have mentioned we have HH expedition zips. I am thinking that a full length fleece SPE is the way to go for us in the colder seasons, may see about something lighter for the warmer seasons.

Just measured the pad and it is actually 1/4".

OK, so half an inch of CCF, plus reflectix. You should still stay plenty warm with that.

Even in the Hennessy, I personally would still taper the CCF for a little better fit. Are you planning on adding "ankle pads" to the SPE?

Not sure...REALLY new to hanging so any and all suggestions are very welcome.
Plan was to make the spe full length and have the side wings full length as well so would be easy to place padding where it is needed.

Off to work, lots to think about! Dont have a sewing machine myself but use these little projects as an excuse to visit with my Gramma who does. Just need to have it all planned out or she takes over

Beware...DIY is addicting...you may find yourself at Gramma's house more frequently, or buying a thread-injector (what us "he-men" call sewing machines in order to seem more rugged)

Make it full length, but don't make the side wing pockets one long strip. Make it two separate pockets per side to give yourself a more options based on temp or what you find more comfortable. It will also be a little more flexible to lie on. If you make it so there is an envelope style closure to hold the pads in, rather than just relying on a snug fit, you'll also be able to remove one or more layers of the "sandwich" based on temps without the pad shifting around.

The more options you have to "dial it in", the better.

    Good luck, and happy hanging!

Was thinking of leaving the side pockets full length, but having two openings on each side so that the side pads can be moved as needed. Will be loaded on a tobogan for winter outings so bulk isnt a big deal.

Keep the reflective surface as close to your body as you can, it maximises the amount of radiant heat reflected back to your body.

I've tried combinations all ways and found that this is the warmest.

CCF is a great alternative to an UQ in winter if you can deal with the bulk of a big roll.

I was kind of thinking the same thing about the reflectix.

I would do the wings in a couple of sections instead of one long sleeve. Put a small gap so as the main pad curves the wings can too - in the hammock the gap will close.
