Something else we need to be aware of is the possibility of a burn ban. I'm pretty sure there is one in affect now and it doesn't look like the weather is going to help that.
I'm bring my brand new alky stove anyway so I'm set

I'm planning on a grilled steak for Friday evening and experimenting with some grilled Hor Dourves for Saturday evening. The fire ban doesn't pretain to 'cooking' fires according to samsara. If we get caught we can blame it on him, he won't be there.

If I'm reading the map right...I may not be, but...if I am, then we should be okay. The hike should stay in Hernando and Sumter counties, which do not currently have a burn ban, according to the Florida Forest Service site. If we were to stray into either Polk or Lake county, then we'd be under a burn ban.
That being said, obviously be careful with the fire; drought conditions don't care much about lines on a map. I'll be bringing my wood burner either way; it's my pot stand/windscreen/priming pan for my alchy burner anyway. I'll keep an eye on the Forest Service site right up until I leave Friday morning and keep everyone apprised.
I think we stay in Sumter by and large--especially on the north side. Even so, I doubt we are going to build any giant white man fires. But, a word of caution in advance is indeed a worthy thing. What distresses me more though is that I seem to need to scrap my plans to hike in my giant turkey suit. I have been stitching feathers all week and all for nothing now!
Hedgehogs! Why can't they just share the hedge?

Pffft....only #2.
It's a good idea to stay informed and legal right now. There was a fatality down here this week and the lawyers are lining up and suing anyone and anything that moves while trying to blame it on a controlled burn (and blaming forestry for approving the burn) a mile and a half DOWNWIND. A person conducting a completely legal burn that had nothing to do with the crash (I think it was probably a case of a truck driver falling asleep and then the pile up resulted due to the fog and any smoke from a number of wildfires and who knows what other sort of fires) who is now probably going to go broke from legal fees.
I would hate for a grilled steak to get you in that kind of trouble. Having said that... I'm pretty sure you'll be fine with a cooking fire even if there is a burn ban, just make sure
It's a tough time to work where I do right now...
