I bought my ripstop at hancock fabrics and I'm not sure what kind it is. Has anyone waterproofed any and how did it turn out? Recomendations on what waterproofing to get? I'm thinking of sewing two 12'x5' together to make a 12'x10' and leaving a channel in the middle to run my line through. Maybe putting a knot in the line at each end to keep it from sliding and tying each end off around the tree.

^^^+1...and the 1.9oz (before waterproofing) nylon you have will make the tarp twice as heavy and bulky as the 1.1 silnylon commonly used.
The nylon you have will make two nice hammocks.
joemcc, since you don't have much in the way of insulation yet, you might think of making a hammock sock. It's basically an envelope that surrounds your hammock to creat a microclimate retaining some heat. A hammock sock shouldn't be waterproof, but dwr would be fine. This would help keep some wind off of you. It's no substitute for down, but is just one more tool in your kit.

If you get the bug and go for it, don't, that's do not, tie a knot on both sides of the tarp. It's easier to have the tarp adjustable on the RL and short tie off to a prussic on both ends. Easier than trying to adjust from the trees.
My vote is for a hammock for your better half and maybe a weather shield.

As muchas I like diy I might just buy the tarp. I still plan to mod a sleeping bag into a peapod type design. I also decided to change my suspension. Monumental day for my hammock life lol. Seems to be no end either.
I strongly considered making my own tarp because I love the DIY thing so much. I chose, however, to go with the Chinook 12x9.5" nylon tarp. It's not sil but polyurethane coated and waterproof enough for me. The price was right to at about 40$ from Amazon. I figured that I was going to spend that just on material from Joann's Fabrics.
Just wanted to add that weight isn't much of an issue for me as I'm more of a bushcrafter than a UL hiker.
