Super Glue (CA) prevents Amsteel from fraying

We all know that Amsteel doesn't melt very well, making it difficult to keep the ends from fraying. I discovered that super glue (CA) adheres to Amsteel very well. Using a little dab of the thin CA glue on the last 1/2" of the line prevents fraying. Spray a little accelerant and it cures instantly. Works great.

Thank you for the info. I need to get busy with my amsteel.

It's been sitting in the cupboard for a couple months now. I keep putting off making whoopies. I think it is apprehension due to being overwhelmed with all the whoopie sling info I've been reading and videos I've been watching from the forum on making whoopies.

Or a quick end-splice works, too. Looks nice and neat, as an added extra!

The plethora of whoopie info is a little overwhelming. If you stick to Opie's demos to start with and branch out from there, I think you'll be in good shape.
His picture-by-picture explanations are right on the money.

Huh. Never would have thought of that; my solution is to use a little Gorilla tape wrapped around the end and then replace it every so often when the rubber cement stops sticking.

An end splice works great on the whoopie end. I use the glue on the end of a tarp ridgeline where I do not want an enlarged end so I can still thread it thru a Tarp Flyz.

By the way, you shouldn't harden the taper on a bury. It might interfere with the constriction.

Discovered this when the little shrink wrap doodads on my WBBBs fall off. Works like a charm.

Are you talking about zing-it/lash-it/dyneema (1.75 to 2.2mm) stuff for your ridgeline? You mentioned amsteel, so I assumed whoopies. I wasn't considering ridgelines.

Does the super glue chemically "melt" the strands together? How does it hold up to being bent, an in threading and rethreading through a tarp flyz? I still use fig9's, but am considering going the way of the Dutch.

Zing-it, Lash-it, and Amsteel are all the same material, just different sizes of line. I haven't tried CA on Dyneema.

It doesn't appear to me to change the physical nature of the Amsteel, the CA simply bonds to it. If the end flairs a bit when cut, after some CA I will whittle the end to a point with a knife. An end treated with CA will bend with intent, but it stays pretty straight on its own. It makes it very easy to thread thru a Tarp Flyz (which are much nicer than Fig 9s IMO).
