    Ocean Pond North East Florida

I'm new to Hammock Camping, just can't stay out of the woods. Does anyone know if you can use Hammocks in Ocean Pond Campground? It's owned by the U.S. Forrest Service. I'v tried to call and checked out the web site, can't find any info. Any help would be great, Donho

Welcome from the PNW. Many park rangers are OK with them if they get an explanation and you use LNT principles.

It's in Osceola National Forest, and the national forests do not have any stated rules (that I'm aware of) preventing hammocking. I know that Ocala National Forest doesn't, at least. The 2nd Annual FL Hang was there just last weekend.

However, looking at the campground information, it's a front-country site. So, the local ranger may or may not be on board with hammocking. Your best bet is to call ahead to the ranger district again and see if they're okay with it. I know it's hard to get a hold of these folks from what you've said, but it's probably worth it.

Anyway, welcome from over here in Gainesville!

No problem. Please let me know if you need any help. This place is wonderful for knowledge related to hammocking.

If I may make a request, though, especially since this is a front-country site, please use tree straps of some sort or another; the image hammocking has here in Florida could use the good PR. Unfortunately, you can't hang in state parks, regardless of tree straps or good stewardship (there's a law against tying anything to a tree in a state park here, including a bear bag!), and good PR anywhere in the state is helpful for trying to get that changed.

    Anyway, welcome to the madness!
