    DIY Down Sleeves in DigiCam

Scratched another DIY Project of the list this afternoon as I continue getting ready for a trip to Algonquin next month, anticipated temps for the trip are -25c to -30c (-13f to -22f). Today's undertaking was down sleeves to bring my winter “sleep system” one step closer to completion, only a hood remains now.

The sleeve shells are made out of 1.5oz ripstop and filled with 750+ FP Duck Down, they have 5 sewn-through baffles plus an adjustable cinch cords channel on the wrist. The pair weighs in at 7.5oz with stuff sack and straps.

Good work on the sleeves, [o]TTeR. With all of your digicam gear, we may have a hard time finding you in the piney woods.

    Cheers

You been working out buddy? lol. Nice work on the sleeves, though I think you should use a lower profile fabric or your never going to stop getting PMs!

Really like these a lot! They look great. This has been on my list for some time but hadn't found some answers I was looking into. +1 on any plans that you may have to share !

Nice... but, how will you see your arms in the camo material?

Speaking of which, where did you find 1.5 digicam????? Inquiring minds want to know!

The trick is make sure the wildlife can’t find (or see) me or the camera before I get the shot, in those Piney Woods…really looking forward to this hang my friend!

I had to fight the urge to overstuff the forearms and go “Popeye” with these, I even thought about printing an anchor tattoo on them. To be honest, I’m not going with the DigiCamo on purpose; the sleeves were made using off-cuts, scrapes and leftover down from the Snow Beast & BB Clone Projects.

There really isn’t much of a plan, I cut the arm off an old ski jacket that I never got around to tossing, cut the seams open and laid it out on a piece of foam core, cut out the shape and used it as a template to make the sleeve shells. The first sleeve I made was too tight, the original jacket had synthetic insulation so I had to add 4” (via spacers shown in the shot) to the width to compensate for the down loft. After cutting the inside/outside panels out, I thread injected them together leaving a small opening, flipped inside out and filled it (like a big pillow) with 2.2oz of down. The next step was to beat the down out evenly then sew through to make the baffles, trick is make sure the down stays evenly distributed when your sewing. I’m sure it’s not the “correct” method but it worked none the less. Notes on the shot below: I use a soldering pen to cut nylon for 2 reasons…its easier then scissors when using templates and the melted edges don’t fray.

We get the digicam from a local Fabric retailer called Lens Mills, they carry it but don’t seem to have any idea what it is, we didn’t know it was 1.5 until Dant8ro weighted it on the last project.

lol, it's actually 1.46 on average for any of you gram weenies out there. I like it because its wonder fabric, fairly strong, soft, light weight (ish) and most of all down-proof (proven again and again).

It's a great project fabric and seems to be the only one of its type in that blooded store. They have a green digi but in a much heavier (and i'm thinking coated) fabric.
